Technique’ing it… Snatch

Yesterday was 1RM snatch. Squat snatch to be precise.

Don’t know about you, but I am seriously uncomfortable dropping into a squat with weight over my head. I’m guessing that is a reasonable human response. Though it does impact my ability to snatch. (and that whole surgically repaired shoulder and the groin pull, but I digress)

So I didn’t go for a 1 rep max or a new PR – whatever you like to call it.

I spent the session doing light snatch balance and snatch motion with just the bar. Did 50+ reps with just the bar. Mid-shin, through the pulls, dropping into a squat, attempting to catch the bar overhead instead of my usual – catch in a power snatch and ride the bar down into a squat…. (I know you’ve seen people do it.)

By the 50th rep the motion was feeling decent, and I was happy that I didn’t go for weight.

The looks around me (very full class, many newbies) was interesting especially when I was doing snatch balance. Coaches, on the other hand, were impressed and helped me out a LOT. Show desire, try to do what people say, say “Thank you,” and people will go out of their way to help you. Trust me, I need the help.

Very productive day.

Then we got to play with handstand walks. I can’t handstand walk, but I finally have a handstand –  PROGRESS!!!!! Though my surgery shoulder is pretty tired this morning from both snatching and handstands.

Watched one of those gymnasty women handstand walk the length of the gym. Toes pointed to the sky, legs together. Amazing to watch.

Today’s WOD (I overslept and didn’t hit 6am today) is SOOOOOO in my wheelhouse….. (except for the left leg lunges because of my knee) Looking forward to 5:30pm.
